Runes and palmistry. Runes on the palm

Sveta wanted to say “no,” but at the sight of the pie her mouth filled with saliva. For too long there was a smell of food around - and there was not a crumb in her mouth.
Besides, Ulf just wanted to talk. And on the shore near the piers it was crowded...
Well, he won’t eat me, she thought. And then she quickly snatched the pie from Ulf’s fingers.
The nails on these fingers turned out to be thick, with bluntly filed tips. They rose above the fingertips with cones rounded at the ends. Translucent gray, with black veins condensing towards the base.
“Follow me,” Ulf announced. He added confidently: “Don’t be afraid.” With me you are in no danger.
Except for yourself, Sveta thought gloomily.
Ulf, having already turned around, moved towards the shore, hiding behind the counters. She followed, carefully bending over. And on the go, painfully deciding - to eat right now or not to eat?
On the one hand, my stomach was growling. On the other hand, before you start making the pie, you should take out the cotton pads, rolled into a tube and tucked behind your cheeks, so that your face appears puffy and your lower lip sticks out...
But don’t drag them out publicly. What if she returns here later - but the camouflage has already been ruined!
I’ll wait, Sveta decided courageously. And with the eye that was not covered by the bandage, she looked at the piers - laid on piles, reminiscent of bridges going into the sea. Each of them had ships swaying...
Her gaze suddenly fell on a strikingly handsome man walking along the pier to the right. A couple of people walking towards him suddenly moved to the side, giving way.
The handsome man was tall, broad-shouldered, with a face that made Sveta’s heart skip a beat. Long white hair was blown by a light breeze from the bay. The light blue shirt was tied with an intricate belt, on which something sparkled - precious stones?
He walked with strides. One hand is carelessly thrown on the hilt of a sword suspended from the belt...
Ulf, sensing a slight sweetness that appeared in the scent of the girl following him, turned around. He said displeasedly, noticing who she was staring at with her unblindfolded eye:
- This is a light alv. Beautiful people, but human women should not mess with them. Otherwise, they might later find her dead, with her teeth and eyes pulled out.
Sveta silently glanced sideways at the werewolf and hurriedly stepped forward, again turning her gaze to the handsome man. Something doesn’t look like this light one like an animal...
Ulf suddenly appeared right in front of her, and her forehead bumped into his chest. She straightened up with a jerk and looked at the werewolf.
And she looked angrily.
“Straighten the bandage,” he said with some kind of bad calm. - Got lost... and don’t look at the elves. Never. Women forget about everything if they look into their eyes for a long time. Especially if they don’t have a security amulet. You're not wearing it, are you?
Why are they allowed to walk around the city, where there are a lot of these women, flashed through Sveta’s mind.
“Don’t lag behind,” Ulf added in an orderly tone.
And, turning around, he again walked towards the strip of shore between the two piers.
Sveta, exhaling angrily, returned to its place the strip of fabric cut from her T-shirt. She hurried after. For some reason I no longer felt drawn to look at the handsome man...
A couple of fires were burning near the water - and the people standing near them were cooking something. Ulf passed them and stopped a few steps short of reaching the pier on the left side. He didn’t even ask, but immediately announced, turning around:
- You are hungry. Eat. There is no potion in this pie, don't be afraid.
Sveta, frowning at him with one eye, picked out the cotton rolls from her mouth with her finger. She squeezed them in her fist.
And finally she took a bite. The dough turned out to be sour and greasy - but there was a sweet layer in the middle. Tastier than any cake...
Ulf nodded approvingly and muttered:
- When a person eats, his heart softens.
The expert has been found, Sveta thought angrily, taking another bite.
“Well, now let’s talk,” the werewolf announced quietly.
And for some reason he untied the leather laces that were tightening the shirt at his throat. Then he pulled the edges of the collar with both hands, deepening the cut that runs from the neck down.
- Look. Here is a silver hryvnia.
Sveta, taking another bite of the pie, which now seemed offensively small to her, stared at the man’s chest. Densely overgrown with hair of the same dirty milky shade as the mane on this Ulf’s head.
There was no growth around the twisted silver decoration, which went down in a semicircle below the collarbones. It’s like a werewolf shaved his path there. Near the hryvnia there was a strip of soft pink skin. Thin, like a wound that has just healed. It looked out from above and below, exactly repeating the outlines of a silver cord...
“I wear this hryvnia without taking it off,” Ulf said evenly. - When the wolf living inside me wakes up, silver burns my skin. And I become human again. So don't be afraid - I will never hurt you. I will never turn into a wolf next to you. But that is not all. There are people who cannot stand us - and if they are nearby, then the skin under the mane burns. If a werewolf woman feels disgust towards him, her skin burns. If she hates him, it burns through her skin...
He dropped the words calmly, monotonously, and for some reason goosebumps crawled between Sveta’s shoulder blades. And the hand with the half-eaten pie dropped.
This is not life, she thought. Eternal torture. Is this all true?
The strip of pink skin around the silver cord glittered unpleasantly in the sun.
- Therefore, it is difficult for a werewolf to find a bride for himself. She must be brave, not disgusted with him... not disdainful of him. But the werewolf needs to find a human wife.
Why, it flashed through Sveta’s mind. She raised her eyebrows questioningly, looking straight into Ulf's eyes - amber, shining in the sun.
The werewolf smiled slightly, revealing his fangs. Posted by:
- If a werewolf gets along with a woman who once had a wolf in her family, then instead of children they will have wolf cubs. Just wolf cubs. They will never speak, they will never turn into people. And a werewolf who has come into contact with a woman who has at least one drop of wolf blood in her veins is expelled from Ulfholm. Because the wolf, who doomed his children to such a fate, does not know how to control himself. He can easily go crazy - and rip off the hryvnia. And this is dangerous. Silver calls to the human that is in us. It's too difficult to be human without it. Sometimes it's almost impossible.
Ulf's eyes burned with an orange-yellow fire, the black spots of the pupils in them trembled and squinted.
How do they live, these werewolves, Sveta thought in fascination. So much pain - and yet they themselves go through it...
And then she pulled herself together - what if it was all a lie? And in general, he pulled her out of her native world, like a carrot from a garden! There is no point in feeling sorry for any animal here! You need to think about yourself...
Only after these thoughts did she suddenly feel disgusted and disgusted. But to myself.
Ulf's smile grew wider. The fangs became almost completely visible.
- You're angry - but not with me. To myself? No need.
This is how he understood, Sveta was amazed. By smell?
“You are fearless,” Ulf said softly.
Pathetic, undisguised flattery, Sveta decided. And, looking at him independently, she took a bite of the pie. Let her see that you won’t get her with compliments.
- You are afraid of me, but you do not feel disgust towards me. The Norns sent you to me. They were not mistaken, because I am standing next to you and do not feel the heat on my skin. I will do everything so that you never hate me...
Sveta snorted. Well, it's just like a nightingale. Talkative werewolves here!
“Think for yourself,” said Ulf, “I did not take you by force from the house of the sorceress Aug.” I accepted your decision. Because if you really hate me, with all your heart, there is no point in keeping you with me. I can't live sniffing the stench of my scorched skin all the time. But I understand that all this is too fast for you. Too unexpected.
And as soon as he guessed, Sveta thought mockingly, finishing the pie.
The werewolf looked towards the city, then turned his gaze back to her.
- I’ll be honest - I was looking after you when you left the witch’s house.
I was keeping an eye on him, Sveta thought.
And then she remembered the shadow that flashed behind the dark man before he fell. So that's who it was...
“You met a dark elf when you were going down the path,” Ulf said, confirming her suspicions. - The dark ones are not dangerous if you don’t touch them. But for some reason this one became interested in you. And you just stared at the bright alva. Since childhood, the people here have been teaching their daughters that you shouldn’t look at fair people - you could end up without eyes. And without teeth. And also die a bad death. In addition, local women wear amulets, which the elves do not like. If I had the opportunity, I would let you walk around Nordmark. So that you understand where you are. Of course, I would look out for you... but now something has happened. They're waiting for me at the king's fortress right now.
The werewolf waved his hand towards the city that was noisy nearby. Sveta turned her gaze to the thin ribbon of the fortress wall, visible in the distance, above the roofs.
“I can’t look after you anymore,” Ulf continued. - So I want to offer something. Come aboard my ship. I will not touch you with a finger or a claw. I will not allow you to be harmed - I will not allow anyone, not even myself. I’ll go to sleep with my people myself, I’ll give you my cabin. You'll be safe there. And you won't have to get your own food... or sleep in a cold cave.
In the cave, Sveta noted.
One hundred against one - he not only knocked out that dark alf, he also followed her all the way to the cave.
But there was something that Sveta could not help but admit. The werewolf named Ulf never tried to impose his will on her. From the very beginning.
- It will be good for me, because I can take care of you. It will be good for you, because you will be safe,” Ulf Ormulfson announced.
And Sveta thought about it.
If this hryvnia restrains the werewolf, then it turns out that he is relatively safe. But only relatively.
At the old woman's house, Ulf had already begun to turn around. Elongated jaws with protruding fangs and fur on the cheeks are proof of this. But for some reason silver didn’t stop him then
Moreover, he did not smell of burnt skin at that moment. It didn't seem to smell. However, nearby, in a fireplace without walls, the coals were burning out. And there was a distinct smell of smoke in the house...
However, the werewolf leaned over the old woman very threateningly!
“If you don’t agree, then at least don’t return to that cave,” the werewolf quickly added. “It’s too close to the city, and there’s water nearby.” It's a convenient place. Two men slept there last night. The smell remains for a long time, the smell does not deceive... and if I were sure that I could look after you at night, I would have allowed you to stay there. I honestly admit that I would save you and expect a reward. But now everything has changed. I may not have time to save you.
How he opened up, Sveta decided angrily. It lures and intimidates.
Maybe he's lying about the cave. Or maybe not. It's really too close to the city. And a werewolf's sense of smell should be different from that of a human - so he could speak the absolute truth about men...
“I’m waiting for your decision,” Ulf said tensely. - Whatever it is, I will accept it. How he was received in the house of Aug.
If the girl refuses, the werewolf quickly thought, he will have to go to Hrolig on the way to the fortress. The old Hirdman of Earl Skallagrim owes him something, he will help...
But then Ulf saw something that immediately changed the course of his thoughts.
“Look there,” he ordered, raising his hand and pointing at the alva standing in front of the counters. - That bright alf over there. It seems that he liked your only eye with which you looked at him.
Sveta glanced at where the werewolf was pointing. And I saw a handsome man standing higher up the slope. An empty spot formed around him, as if people were avoiding getting too close to him...
The bright alf did not look in her direction. He stood, turned half-turn, arrogantly looking somewhere to the side.
And it was again difficult to take my eyes off him. He froze in a painfully beautiful way - throwing his head up, turning his shoulders. And the hand is thrown so picturesquely, carelessly onto the hilt of the sword...
With some effort, Sveta turned her gaze back to Ulf. She clenched her teeth, driving away unnecessary thoughts.
A decision had to be made. Either climb, as the werewolf put it, onto his ship, or not. And the first thing is scary, but also being left here alone, not knowing the situation...
The first drop of sweat rolled down her back. The sun was heating up more and more, it was too hot to stand with my jacket on my hips. And my head, under the hat pulled over my forehead, was rotting.
“At least go with me to where I will buy you an amulet to scare away the alf,” Ulf hastily suggested. - It's here in the city. There will be at least some protection.
Wow, Sveta decided. At least some. It turns out that even the amulet does not completely protect against the light elves?
She sighed heavily. He did intimidate her, after all.
But on the other hand, this Ulf asks and offers over and over again, but does not insist by force...
“Yes,” Sveta said not too confidently. She nodded her head and added: “Yes.”
“Follow me,” Ulf immediately ordered. - I'll take you to the ship. You can stop limping and hunching over. You won't be touched with me.

It was impossible not to limp at all, because one of the heels flew off.
But it was more convenient to walk without hunching over. True, under the bag that Sveta placed on her back, under her turtleneck, her skin burned - from the heat, from sweat.
Ulf's ship rocked at the end of the pier, fourth from the left. It looked the same as a couple of other ships laid up at the same pier - high bow and stern, decorated with dragon heads, masts without sails...
Having reached a pair of planks thrown from the pier onto the side of the ship, the werewolf stopped. He said, turning to her:
- I promised not to touch you - and I won’t touch you. But here you can fall into the water. So I invite you to touch me yourself.
And Ulf extended his hand. Palm up.
And if it means something to them, Sveta doubted. Once she held the hand, it means she promised to get married...
She shook her head and muttered in Russian:
- No.
The werewolf's face did not change. He stepped aside and gestured towards the gangplank.
And she went forward.
The boards trembled under her feet, Sveta took small steps, spreading her arms and feeling the gaze of several men standing on the deck of the ship. But she still made it without falling and jumped onto the deck.
A werewolf immediately appeared nearby and muttered:
- To the right.
And then he was the first to move towards the hole, which was visible a couple of steps from the mast.
The cabin that Ulf so generously gave her turned out to be a tiny room hidden under the deck covering. Sunlight poured in from a pair of small windows, covered, oddly enough, with thin and completely transparent glass.
The situation here turned out to be more than modest - a heap of furs in one of the corners and a huge chest opposite the door. All.
The werewolf silently walked past Sveta, who froze a step from the threshold. He opened the chest, took out something, and turned to her.
- Here's a knife. In our world, even a woman cannot live without a weapon. Besides, you will be calmer with him.
Ulf stood by the chest, not moving from his place - and Sveta, tearing off his hat and bandage from his eye, approached. Carefully, she took the knife with one hand.
It was sheathed, from which hung a leather cord, long enough to be worn around the neck. Pendant according to local fashion...
Sveta slipped her hat under the collar of her jacket, which stood up on her hips. She grabbed the knife with both hands and pulled the handle, wrapped in strips of the same leather, with a silvery gleaming pommel.
“Over time, I will select another blade for you,” Ulf said. - This one has a handle that's a little long for your palm. But for now it will do.
Over time, Sveta thought. This means that the werewolf is sure that she will not escape from him now.
The blade was as long as her palm. Two fingers wide, with a sharpened edge that glistened icy in the light.
“I’ll leave now,” Ulf said quickly, not taking his eyes off her. - But I'll be back soon. They will bring you food. If you want to relieve yourself, go on deck. I'll warn my people, they'll take you straight to the outhouse.
Sveta was embarrassed. And the werewolf calmly said:
- Something else. What's your name, girl?
She returned the knife to its sheath - the blade rustled softly against the leather from which it was made. Dropped:
- Svetlana.
- Sveitlan? - the werewolf parted his lips in the semblance of a smile. The jagged edge of fangs flashed. - What about your father's name?
Why would that be, Sveta thought gloomily. But still she answered:
- Oleg.
“Sveitlan Holegsdoutir,” Ulf drawled slowly. - I like your name. Wait for my return, and we will talk about everything again. In the meantime, rest... Sveitlan.
He closed the chest and moved towards the exit. While he walked around her on the left side, he looked at her without stopping, looking sideways. As if he was studying.
When the door slammed behind him, Sveta first threw the knife on a pile of furs in the corner - and began to get rid of her disguise. My back under the bag was burning almost unbearably...
She untied the sleeves of the jacket that covered her hips, unzipped the zipper, and threw the clothes on the chest. Then she ran into the corner behind the door - so that the swinging shutter would cover him from anyone entering, if anything happened. She pulled off her turtleneck and T-shirt, which was held only at her waist to make it appear thicker. I untied the tights that I wore under jeans in the winter, and now I pulled them over my chest, pressing it down...
And finally she freed herself from the bag, the strap of which, having shortened it, was thrown over one shoulder like a sling. I ran around the cabin, put everything on top of my jacket, and pulled on my turtleneck again.
Then, spitting on everything, she took off her shoes and walked barefoot to the window. After the fur-lined boots, the boards seemed pleasantly cool.
Outside the window there was a wide strip of water. Further, at the next pier, ships similar to Ormulfson's ship swayed. The muffled splash of waves against the side of the ship and the distant cries of seagulls could be heard.
It’s time to think things over properly, Sveta decided.
What Ormulfson said - and suggested - sounded reasonable. And he behaved quite like a gentleman, but...
A phrase from a children's fairy tale suddenly popped into my mind. Granddaughter, put the pie on the table, and lie down next to me, said the Gray Wolf to Little Red Riding Hood.
And she lay down.
Sveta smiled sadly. They say that in the oldest version of the fairy tale there was a werewolf instead of a wolf. And it was not little Little Red Riding Hood walking through the forest, but a completely mature girl. Moreover, the werewolf asked her to undress before he lay down. An ancient warning for all who believe in werewolves...
But there wasn't much choice. No one except Ulf was eager to help her. And to survive here, apparently, is not easy. The world where Ulf brought her because of this is the Middle Ages with werewolves, witches and elves. Dark and light.
Sveta sighed heavily.
And then I thought about something else. Ormulfson looked to be about thirty years old. Of course, a person, that is, a werewolf who sails on a ship, has weathered skin, salted by the sea winds... so Ulf may actually be even younger - he just looks older.
But it's unlikely he's still a virgin. It’s hard to believe that the werewolf was still sitting around waiting for that one and only one, from which the skin under the mane does not burn. He still had someone.
I wish I knew what happened to that woman. Or not even with her - but with them. Otherwise, the fairy tale about Little Red Riding Hood wouldn’t turn out to be the fairy tale about Bluebeard...
The door behind her opened, and someone quickly placed a tray near the entrance. Straight to the deck.
But the door slammed shut before Sveta had time to turn around.

At the gates of the fortress, Ulf was met by the head of the werewolf guard of the king, Gunnulf. He nodded barely noticeably and walked alongside, walking with Ulf to the king’s main house, attached to the tower.
And when they moved away from the gate where the guards were standing, he quickly grumbled - so that the words merged into one low growl:
- King Olaf is dead. In the bedchamber where he was last seen, there is no blood, but it stinks of death. And Olaf never left there. How he was killed and where the body disappeared is unclear.
-Who saw him last? - Ulf muttered quietly.
- Gyuda, his concubine. The king called her, but let my guys go. He said that he didn’t want them to hear and smell everything. It's strange because he's never done this before.
Ulf took a few more steps, thinking. Then he quietly said:
- How exactly they killed him and where they put him then, let his sons figure it out. Did you tell Gudbrand that his father was dead?
“The fact that I have lived next to people for a long time does not mean that I have learned stupidity from them,” Gunnulf answered a little louder than before. “The king’s youngest son has already stated that Gyuda did not hear Olaf releasing his werewolves. And this means that we are also under suspicion. It would be better if he thought that his father was alive.
Ulf nodded silently as he walked, agreeing. Asked:
- Where is Gudbrand now?
“He’s sitting in the banquet hall,” Gunnulf roared muffledly. - And all the jarls that are now in Nordmark are already there. You're the only one late. I won't go with you, I wasn't invited there. Be careful, Ulf. Then we'll talk again...
He turned to the side, and Ulf, reaching a long stone building attached to the fortress tower, entered the banquet hall.
The feast tables were moved to the walls. Alva lights burned dimly along the walls, hung in chains under the ceiling made of thick oak blocks. Gudbrand sat on the dais, on a bench next to his father's ash chair. The jarls crowded into the hall, ten steps away from him. They were talking quietly...
Ulf saw among them a gloomy Skallagrim with two sons. And the surprisingly calm Arnstein, Hildegard's father.
Sigtryg, Olaf's nephew, stood closest to the dais. Together with his father, Earl Hogni. He looked calmly, Sigtryg looked gloomy.
- Ulf, come to me! - Gudbrand ordered loudly and displeasedly.
And Ulf approached, trying not to wince. Olaf's youngest son loved to call werewolves as if they were dogs...
It was scorching under the hryvnia as he walked around the hall. But it is quite tolerable - Ulf is accustomed to the contempt of some of the jarls of Olaf and his relatives. As well as the smell of hatred that emanated from them.
But the frowning Sigtryg and the indifferent-looking Earl Hogni smelt of joy, and Ulf did not like this most of all.
He froze three steps in front of Gudbrand and bowed his head.
- Olafson, sorry for being late...
“Everyone has been here for a long time,” Gudbrand said angrily. On the tender, unweathered cheeks of Olaf's youngest son, spots of an unkind, bright cranberry blush appeared. - Only you are walking somewhere! Although at the first call from the king’s house he must run here!
Gudbrand fell silent, and Earl Hogni announced loudly so that everyone in the hall could hear:
- Jarl Ulf now has no time for the troubles that happened in the king’s house. They say he is going to get married!
The skin under the mane was burned.
Calm down, thought Ulf, clenching his fangs. He tensed, raising his head...
It turned out that the undercoat on the cheekbones did not appear.
- My messenger should have told you that my father was missing! - Gudbrand shouted. - But for some reason he didn’t find you on your longship!
Ulf answered, trying not to growl:
- His words were conveyed to me. And as soon as I learned about the disappearance of King Olaf, I hurried here. My longship has come to Nordmark to rest, Olafson. I’m not on combat duty right now, so I didn’t sit on the ship inseparably, waiting for news...
For a moment, confusion appeared in the eyes of Gudbrand, a young guy of about twenty-two. Appeared and disappeared. Then the blue eyes looked at the werewolf with hatred.
Beads of sweat appeared on Ulf's forehead. It became increasingly difficult to control myself - and not turn around.
“It is necessary to inform my elder brother, Thorgeir, about what has happened,” Gudbrand said curtly. - You, Earl Ulf, have been busy lately only with your own affairs, so I will tell you where my brother is. Five days ago he sailed with his ships to guard the sea borders beyond Hrøland. ...you will go there too. You will find Thorgeir and tell him everything. I think after this he will want to return to Nordmark. You will remain in his place to guard the western borders beyond Hröland. This is my order.
Ships not only from Jotunheim sail into the sea beyond Hröland, Ulf thought gloomily. But also from Muspelsheim. Huge black planes carrying fiery jotuns...
But he is sent with one ship to replace all of Thorgeir's ships. Meanwhile, Olaf's eldest son has six. The king's youngest son could have sent the same Skallagrim with his three longships to Hröland. Three ships are still better than one.
“I will need time to gather people from my hird (team),” Ulf said evenly. “They were sent home to rest and recover from their wounds. After this I will sail.
Gudbrand grimaced.
- My father trusted the werewolves who guarded him - but disappeared that night. Now I have to rely on the werewolf, who is not able to sail immediately. Because he was suddenly drawn to skirts!
“There are only nine people on my drakkar, Olafson,” said Ulf. - This is not enough for a fight. But you want me to stay on Hrøland?
He did not say the rest - that three of these nine received wounds, albeit minor ones, in the last campaign. That another one is now recovering on the ship, recovering from severe wounds. And four are recovering at home.
“Okay, pack your hird,” said Gudbrand. And he craned his neck, trying to look down at the tall werewolf. - And then set sail. Immediately!
- That’s what I’ll do, Olafson. - Ulf bowed his head again.
Then he turned around and walked towards the exit. On the way, I heard Sigtryg grunting muffledly behind him - and the heat burned even more under his mane.
For some reason I suddenly remembered Hildegard. By now she was probably already considered the bride of Sigtryg Hognison.
Ulf frowned, driving away unnecessary thoughts.
And, leaving, I thought about something else. What to do now with Sveitlan? You cannot take it with you on a hike. Maybe we should leave it in Gunnulf's house for now? True, he has a son in the house, for whom the time has also come to get married. A werewolf without a mate - and next to him there will be a girl who has no aversion to the wolf breed...
Ulf felt his upper lip lift.
Gunnulf emerged from the side and walked next to him again. He asked impatiently:
- What did they tell you?
“I’m being sent to find Thorgeir and give him the news of my father’s disappearance,” Ulf grumbled. - After this, it was ordered to remain to guard the sea borders beyond Hröland.
“It smells bad, Ulf,” Gunnulf said quietly, barely audible. - I've already talked to my guys. This night the werewolf guards will leave Nordmark. All, to the last wolf. And those who have families will take them with them. Olaf's wolf hird is still thinking...
- How is it? Did something happen that I don't know? - Ulf slowed down.
“It’s about to happen,” Gunnulf promised. - I can smell it. That girl, Gyuda, after waking up in the morning and not finding Olaf nearby, went to the women's house. Gudbrand interrogated her already there. And when I tried to see this Gyuda, the women in the women’s house started screaming and drove me away. But I walked around the house. It’s summer, the windows are open, all the smells are blowing outside...
- Did you smell anything? - Ulf asked briefly.
“From one window there was the smell of the woman, Olaf and the potion,” Gunnulf answered. - Everyone at once. And the whimpering could be heard. I think it was this Gyuda that I smelled. But I don’t know what kind of potion she smelled of. Maybe sleepy. Or intoxicating. But it is useless to tell Gudbrand about this. Olaf's youngest son never loved us. As do some of the local jarls. It was the old king who understood that without wolf blades it would be difficult for the people of Erheim... but where is Olaf now? It’s good if his soul feasts in Valhalla, next to Odin. However, there was no blood left on the floor of the bedchamber, which means he did not have time to remove the blade before his death.
“But there is also Thorgeir,” Ulf noted. - And the king’s middle son, Hallstein. They also understand that Erheim needs the wolves of Ulfholm.
-Where are they all now? - Gunnulf grumbled. - And when will they return? And even if they return, it is unknown what might happen to them here. I'll give you one piece of advice, Ulf. Gather your people and leave Nordmark. But not to Hröland, but home, to Ulfholm. Let people figure it out among themselves. And without us. If they need us again, they can always send messengers to Ulfholm. But I won’t come to Gudbrand’s call. By the way, look to your left. Take a sniff.
Ulf obediently glanced to the left. He sucked in a breath. It smelled of people, horses in the stables, cattle in the backyard. And food prepared in the kitchen...
And only a moment later it dawned on him that there were no usual wisps of smoke above the fortress’s armory, located just to the left. There was no smell of smoke itself either - only cooling coals.
“The dark elves are gone,” Gunnulf said calmly. - I think just before you arrived. And people don’t know about it yet. The alvas did not pass through the gate. It seems they had a secret passage in their basement - and they went into their dungeons directly from the fortress. When Gudbrand finds out about this, he will go wild. I warned you, Ulf. Goodbye. I hope to see you in Ulfholm.
Gunnulf turned sharply to the side. Ulf quickened his pace, wondering what to do now.
Gunnulf's words were reasonable. But…
He wouldn't lift a finger for Gudbrand's sake. However, if Thorgeir does not find out about what happened, he will remain with Hröland. Meanwhile, Gudbrand will be in charge in Nordmark.
And who knows what kind of capital Olaf’s eldest sons will find when they return?
Maybe Gudbrand is counting on this, Ulf suddenly thought. That the only messenger he would send with a message to his elder brother would run away in cowardice. Moreover, this is a werewolf - so it will be possible to announce the betrayal of the wolves. Blaming on them not only the fact that Thorgeir did not find out in time about his father’s disappearance, but also something else...
In the meantime, while the king's eldest son is sailing off the coast of Hröland, Gudbrand will disperse all the jarls in Nordmark who are loyal to their elder brothers. And he will fill the fortress with his people.
What else will happen in Erheim after this is unknown.
We’ll have to swim to Hröland, Ulf thought reluctantly. And take Sveitlan with you. Now that Gunnulf was about to leave Nordmark, there was no one to leave her with.
But having informed Thorgeir about everything, he will leave for Ulfholm. And let the king's eldest son leave some of his ships to guard Hröland, and he himself hastily sails to Nordmark.
He wondered how the girl was doing now, he wondered. She probably sits in his cabin and sheds tears - mourning both her world and the fact that she was left without the protection of her father and relatives...

Palm fortune telling using runes is an old way of foretelling the future among Scandinavian witches. It appeared in our country not so long ago, so few people really know how to guess in this way. Nevertheless, the accuracy and accuracy of runic palmistry is of interest to many modern fortune tellers.

In the article:

Preparing for palm reading

Runes begin to be interpreted from a person’s dominant hand. Nevertheless, the runes on the non-dominant palm are also very important, since this hand tells about the innate abilities of the individual, about what is inherent in him by nature itself. Very often, clues on the non-dominant limb help to better understand the signs on the dominant one.

Also remember, the clearer and deeper the sign is drawn, the more power it has in a given period of life. If you see a rune, but it is blurry or difficult to distinguish, then perhaps this refers to the future or past. If the sign is located at a distance from other lines or zones, but at the same time it is clear and has a reddish tint, then this indicates that this particular mark tells about the state of affairs of the individual at the present period of time.

It should be noted that the location of the rune is very important for the interpretation of fortune telling. You should be especially careful when the mark is near the main hills. There are only four of them: the hill of Jupiter - the tubercle of the index finger, the hill of Saturn - the middle finger, the hill of Apollo - the tubercle of the ring finger, and the hill of Mercury - the little finger. Each of them is responsible for their own area of activity.

Thus, people with a developed Mount of Jupiter will find themselves in professions related to the management of society, such as politicians, businessmen, officials, and judges. Often found in internal affairs bodies - military, police, military doctors, etc. Those with a large Mount of Saturn are prone to crafts, for example, jewelry, handicrafts, in general, everything that has to do with working with their hands. Farming also belongs to this list.

Those individuals who have a convex mount of Apollo are closely associated with creative activity. All professions related to the creation of beauty are suitable for them. These are all dancers, artists, designers, to some extent architects, hairdressers, fashion designers, etc.

People with a pronounced mount of Mercury are the most socialized in society. Everything that has to do with the exchange of information, communication with people, and simply language itself, applies to them. These are journalists, writers, insurance agents, managers, psychologists, linguists, lawyers, etc.

Basic runes

The main runes are those that are formed by the main lines, such as lines, lives and fates. There are five main runes in total: Eyvaz, Mannaz, Dagaz, Kenaz and Algiz. And now we will tell you more about them.

Eyvaz and Mannaz

If you have the Eyvaz rune in your palm, then this is a very good sign. It symbolizes success in endeavors and happy solutions to problems. It is also a symbol of human development and spiritual growth. It brings spontaneity and unpredictability to life. The main thing is to get into the flow.

Mannaz speaks of the owner’s philanthropy, his willingness to help other people. He finds joy in caring for others and solving their problems. These are serious and thoughtful people who understand the value of life. They make good doctors and rescuers. Magical abilities often manifest themselves from childhood.

Dagaz and Kenaz

Dagaz speaks of the light and airy nature of the owner of the palm. These are childlike, spontaneous people who retain this view of the world even into adulthood. Because of this, they have practically no difficulties in life. In addition, Dagaz can serve as advice to be simpler and look at the world around with a smile and optimism.

Individuals with a similar mark - the Kenaz rune - are distinguished by their sharp mind and insight. It is very difficult to deceive them, as they will immediately expose the liars. They know that they are smarter than most, and because of this they sometimes act arrogant and contemptuous. Therefore, they need a friend who will bring them down to earth. In addition, in this way they may hint to you that you need to look around and figure out what is happening.

Algiz

Algiz is a sign of protection. A lucky person who has a similar mark on his palm will never get into a dangerous situation, will not catch a serious illness, you will not have the experience of unhappy love, etc. She often appears at the tip of one of the main lines, thereby showing which area of life is under her protection.

So, if it is located on the life line, then you have a large supply of energy and good health, both body and mind, which will be with you until the end of your days. You have excellent endurance, both physically and mentally, and do not suffer from overexertion. Even if you happen to overdo it in the gym or work for a long time on a difficult project, a short break will allow you to renew your energy reserves.

If Algiz appears at the tip of the heart line, then this indicates good luck in the relationship. Of course, each of us has experiences, but you will find your true soul mate and spend all your days with her in peace and harmony. If the rune is placed on the line of the mind, then this means that you have many wonderful ideas that you are implementing. They may seem crazy and strange at first, but give them a chance to exist and they will lead you to success!

Minor runes

Although the main runes are the main ones, the secondary ones also play an important role in fate. They are placed on hills or between the main branches. The minor runes are Fehu, Uruz, Thurisaz, Ansuz, Raido, Halagaz, Nautis, Isa, Yera, Ir, Perth, Soulu, Teyvaz, Berkana, Laguz and Inguz. The remaining runes that are not included in the list either do not have a pronounced power or are not found in runic palmistry.

Fehu

Fehu is a good sign, regardless of its position. No matter what hillock this rune is located under, it means the favorable development of this sphere. Also, Fehu is a gradual development, so don’t expect success to suddenly fall on you. But if you improve your skills, you can achieve your goal.

If Fehu is located under the Mount of Jupiter, then you have pronounced organizational and leadership qualities. You have bold ideas that you are afraid to implement. Keep working on your projects and you will definitely get noticed. When it is located under the Mount of Saturn, then you are good at feeling someone else's soul. You will become a good psychologist or teacher. Don't use your gift to harm others.

The rune on the Mount of Apollo tells about your creative gift. You will be able to realize your potential in professions that require a non-standard approach. It is possible that you have a gift as a writer or artist. Well, a mark in the Mercury zone will tell you about your high social activity. You can find a common language with anyone. Develop communication and public speaking skills, and you will reach heights in professions such as manager, journalist, lawyer, businessman, etc.

Uruz

A powerful, strong rune, symbolizing the indomitable strength of a wild animal. Shows an area of life that is worth paying attention to. If it is located in the Jupiter zone, then your leadership qualities are significantly enhanced. It should be noted that this force is aggressive in itself, so you should take time to work on self-control.

Uruz under the Mount of Saturn protects you from temptations. But if it is in an inverted position, then this is a sign that you are overly cautious and afraid of new opportunities. Be bolder! If you see a rune under the Mount of Apollo, part of its energy will be transferred to you. However, be careful not to be obsessed with an idea; don't let it take over you.

If it is located near the Mercury zone, then you should be careful with your words and not make vain promises that you cannot fulfill. If it is visible next to the line of fate, then this indicates your promiscuity. But it can also predict a love encounter that will change your destiny.

Turisaz

This rune also has very strong energy. It is related to Thor, the god of thunder, and therefore gives the owner aggressive protection. Thurisaz itself symbolizes actions, no matter for protection or destruction, and being in the palm of your hand, it is a call to active activity and at the same time powerful protection. It is almost impossible to find on the hills; it often happens near the main lines.

Being near the life line, it indicates dangers that have awaited you previously or will await you in the near future. But her protection will reduce all troubles to nothing. However, when this rune appears, you should be attentive and careful.

If it is located on the line of the mind, then this indicates that a new period dedicated to spiritual development begins in your destiny. In the case when the mark is located in a different place, then this is a wonderful sign. It gives the owner confidence and faith in his own strength, protects him from diseases and the evil eye.

Ansuz

The sacred meaning of this rune is the answer to an important question. But before you know the answer, you need to understand the question. Located under the Mount of Jupiter, she talks about your talent as an adviser. You are a good friend and know how to give the right advice. But who will advise you?

The location of the mark under the Saturn zone indicates a penchant for philosophical speculation. You like to discuss abstract topics and try to understand the unknown. If it is located under the tubercle of Apollo, then this hints at your desire to push the boundaries of modern art. Its location in the Mercury zone indicates a desire to learn as much as possible about human nature.

Raido

This rune signifies the road, constant movement. If it is found under the zone of Jupiter, then this means your desire to conquer peaks - both literally and figuratively. The placement under the Mount of Saturn speaks of the desire to discover who you really are and your place in the world.

If Raido is on the Mount of Apollo, then you have many talents in different areas. Whatever you undertake, you do well. But you don’t like to sit in one place, so you often change your field of activity. And if it is located under the Mount of Mercury, then this indicates your ability to engage in commercial activities.

Khalagaz and Isa

Isa is a frosty rune. Its main meaning is stagnation, peace, lack of development. At the moment, your life is at a dead end. You may not be able to make full use of your talents. Something urgently needs to be changed. Don't be afraid to take drastic measures. You need to get out of the vicious circle.

Khalagaz denotes certain obstacles that will stand in your way. Perhaps you create these obstacles for yourself. In this case, you need to overcome yourself and look fear in the eyes. This interference can also be external. It blocks energy and prevents your efforts from being successful. This could also be advice to develop abilities in the area indicated by the location of the rune.

Nautis

This rune talks about suppressed desires and abilities. The only way to find harmony with yourself is to turn your desires into reality. If this sign is found on any hill, then this indicates a person’s subconscious desire to realize himself in this area.

If Nautis is seen near the heart line, then this tells about a sad love experience or unrequited love. It is also possible that this individual has a problem with expressing and accepting feelings. It also happens that in childhood he did not receive the required love from his parents, so by adulthood he acquired a certain emotional deficiency.

In the case when Nautis is located near the line of the mind, the owner is stuck in a quagmire of empty experiences and routine and cannot get out of there on his own. This rune is a sign that he is in dire need of incentive for further development.

The location of the mark on the life line indicates limited freedom of movement. Perhaps the owner has a chance of getting a serious illness or something is holding him back within narrow limits. He should change his environment and/or lifestyle, for example, go on vacation, change his place of work, etc. It also makes sense to check with a doctor for advanced diseases.

Yera and Ir

The presence of Yera in your palm, wherever it is, is a good sign. It seems to foreshadow that your efforts will finally be noticed and appreciated. Regardless of location, the mark hints at quick success. It also symbolizes the cyclical nature of your activities. Periods of activity, generation and implementation of new ideas are replaced by recession, disappointment and inactivity.

Ir is also a protective rune, but, unlike Thurisaz, its protection is less aggressive and active. It acts more gently, although no less powerful than other marks. This sign gives the right to take risky steps and crazy actions, assuring that everything will end well. If it appears in the palm of your hand, you do not have to be afraid of the evil eye or damage, since Ir turns evil witchcraft on its creators.

Perth

Perth is usually interpreted as self-improvement, the development of psychic abilities, and the discovery of mysteries and secrets that were previously hidden. When the mark is located in the zone of Jupiter, this indicates the curiosity and inquisitiveness of the owner of the palm; he strives to understand the world.

In runic palmistry, the location of the mark on the Mount of Saturn speaks of abilities in magical sciences and the opportunity to learn occult secrets. Such a person is a mystic by nature. If Perth is found under the Mount of Apollo, then you are creative in obtaining and processing information. Well, if the notch is located under the Mount of Mercury, then this person takes pleasure in collecting rumors and learning the secrets of others.

Soulo

This is one of the most powerful runes. It means lightning, which means a person with a similar mark on the palm will be similar to it. This individual has great power and the ability to lead people, and it depends only on him how he will use it. Among the most famous owners of this sign are Adolf Hitler and Michelangelo.

People with this mark will have very strong willpower and determination. They strive for their goal no matter what. They are distinguished by a special charisma that allows them to conquer the masses. They are extremely confident and never give up. Sometimes they are well aware of their strength and therefore have a special sense of responsibility. If this person has pronounced creative abilities, then she will study to the point of exhaustion. All of them do not know how to stop halfway.

Tyur and Inguz

Tyr indicates your high competitiveness in a certain field of activity. You can achieve a lot if you follow your purpose. Don’t be afraid to find yourself unclaimed, the main thing is to do what you do best. The location of the rune will indicate to you the supposed activity in which you will find yourself.

Inguz is another rune that protects you and gives you strength for new achievements. Like Tyr, location points you to the area where you will feel most confident. This sign helps those who want to achieve everything through their own efforts and efforts. Naked dreams and fantasies will not help you move forward on the path of life.

Berkana

Regardless of the location of this rune, this is evidence of the owner’s family and philanthropy. So, if she is under, then this indicates his caring attitude towards his subordinates. This is a good boss who knows how to organize work in such a way that everyone feels cozy and comfortable.

In the case when the sign is located on, it is a symbol of a preacher, a person of extraordinary abilities who is trying to bring light and love to all people on earth. Very rare. If it is located under the Mount of Apollo, then you express your creative nature with your family, trying to make their life interesting and enjoyable. A location in the Mercury zone indicates that such a person knows how and loves to communicate with people, listen to their sorrows, and uses this for the benefit of others.

Laguz

Laguz talks about compassion and the ability to empathize, as well as the gift of foresight of the owner of the palm. To find out in which area these qualities will be most useful, you need to look at the location of the rune.

If the sign is under the Mount of Jupiter, then this indicates that you quickly navigate a difficult situation. While everyone is panicking, you quickly take the necessary actions on an intuitive level. You don't think about the consequences of your decision, but for the most part it turns out to be correct.

In the case when the mark is located on the Mount of Saturn, this symbolizes your sensitivity, sometimes reaching the point of empathy. Not only do you understand how your interlocutor feels, but you know

Many occultists have tried to find the key to deciphering the unusual small hand signs. For example, Dr. Papus in his Palmistry suggested that bizarre signs may have a connection with the planets of the solar system, he even cited some of these symbols as an example (see Dr. Papus Palmistry, part two, chapter “Signs of the planets on hands). Palmistry professor Charles Debarrol was of the opinion that unusual signs are very reminiscent of Hebrew letters and can carry those properties and qualities that are inherent in a particular Hebrew letter, from the point of view of the teachings of Kabbalah. Both the astrological theory of Papus and the Kabbalistic version of Desbarrol are equally worthy, but I will give my theory of reading unusual hand signs, Scandinavian RUNES will help me with this. You may be surprised and ask a reasonable question, what connection do Northern European runes have with Indian palmistry? I will answer - the most direct connection, because... runes and chirology are mantic practices.
The word “rune” has a lot of meanings, translated from Gothic RUNA - “secret”; from the ancient Celtic RUN - “whisper”; from Irish RUN - “secret”; from Scottish RUN - “lot”. There is even a translation of this word from Slavic languages. Here is what the famous Russian runologist Anton Platov says about this:
“...At one time I happened to come to the same conclusion as was made by Zhunkevich, almost independently of this researcher. I was struck by the existence of many Slavic rivers bearing the mysterious name Runa. In most cases, the etymology of these names is considered unclear. But there is an old Slavic root RUN: it is from this that the Russian RANA, WOUND, DIGGING, and the Ukrainian RILLYA - “furrow” come from. According to Zhunkevich, the same root contains the verb RUTI - “to cut” and the noun RUNA, meaning “cut”, “furrow”, ... “cut”!” REZA - this is what leads to the idea that the lines on the hands in some Northern European ethnic groups were also called “rune”. “Runes are the process by which the fundamental potential of nature is transmitted and revealed,” says renowned shamanic writer Kenneth Meadows (see Kenneth Meadows, Rune Magic). This is true, because... runic art was revealed to the mythological Odin. The Elder Edda tells how Odin, in an attempt to accomplish something valuable for people, voluntarily hung upside down for nine days, without food or drink, nailed to the tree Yggdrasil (Tree of Life) with his own spear. As a result, he lost his eye, but gained the runes, which were revealed to him as a gift to humanity, as a means of gaining knowledge about the secret forces of nature and the processes underlying existence.

The special connection of each rune with a specific object or property allows you to describe or explore each aspect of the universe. When composing such combinations, the rune acts as a tool of cognition, and if we consider it as a symbol, then it is an analogue of reality. That is, the combination of runes as analogues of reality is capable of reflecting the totality of any events. Runic knowledge, as runologist N. Pennick writes, is “a living system that is being revived, renewed, restored and improved as a viable area of knowledge, equivalent to any other mantic system used today.”
Many interesting books have been written on runics (runics are the science that studies runes), but none of the scientists and researchers have used runic mantics in chirology. Let's try to fill this gap.
There are many runic systems (alphabets), FUTHAR RUNES - “Senior runes” is only one of them, and there are many more “Junior runes”, for example, North Vendian runes (for more details, see Anton Platov “Slavic Runes”). But still, FUTHAR RUNES are the most studied, so we will focus on the “Elder Runes”.
“... the classic runic ancient Germanic system is FUTARK, which is a strictly defined sequence of runic signs with their phonetic meanings, names and magical meanings. The number of medieval monuments with inscriptions made by the ancient Futhark is measured in hundreds...” (A. Platov “Slavic Runes”, chapter “Runes in the Middle Ages”).

According to legend, it was the Futarch system that was revealed to Odin when he was hanging on the Ygdrasil tree, all 24 runes (the 25 rune is empty - denoting the unknown), he saw these signs in the pattern that was formed by nine sticks thrown to the ground.

For a long time, runes were a relic from the pagans of Western Europe, but in the early twentieth century, German occultist Guido von List revived interest in runes. This interest in the mid-twentieth century turned into fanaticism, mixed with the ideas of the Nazi party of Hitler and Co., who wanted to get the magical potential from the runes with which they could conquer the whole World. The Nazis' attempt to use the magical power of the runes failed. And no wonder, because runes are not weapons of mass destruction, runes are a philosophy and a means to understand internal (individual) and external (cosmic) processes. Runes are also the key to understanding small hand signs. In order to put this runic key into practice, a few words should be said about each FUTARKA rune.

As you have already noticed, each rune has several meanings, so it is very easy to get confused and incorrectly decipher the meaning of a particular sign. Moreover, when using runic mantle in chirology, you should always take into account in which area of the hand (on the palm or on the fingers) you come across a sign reminiscent of one of the Futhark runes.

Small signs reminiscent of runes can be found both on bumps and on lines; they can be isolated or associated with other small signs also similar to runes. Runologists call such connections from runes knitted runes.

A runic sign carries either a positive or negative meaning, it all depends on what chirozone it is in and whether it (the runic sign) has any connection with other (main, planetary or minor) lines of the hand.
If a rune (or runes) is located in the energy zones of the fingers (see figure), then it enhances the qualities of the primary element that corresponds to the finger. The rune on the thumb (ETHER) enhances spiritual and intellectual qualities; the rune on the index finger (FIRE) enhances organizational and warlike qualities; on the middle finger (EARTH) influences life and destiny; on the ring finger (AIR) increases inspiration and creative qualities; on the little finger (WATER) increases eloquence and communication skills.
If we exclude the thumb, which is an expression of will (principles) and mind (intellect) and refers to the unmanifested element (ether), then the other four fingers display 12 zodiac signs, with three constellations on each finger. Based on this, we can conclude that the appearance of a rune on a certain phalanx of these four (planetary) fingers may indicate a connection with a certain person born under the corresponding zodiac sign. What this connection will be, long or fleeting, good or evil, can be judged by the runic sign itself and other chirological indicators.
Runes associated with certain lines of the palm indicate events that should happen to an individual at a certain time. What these events will be can be determined by the meaning of the rune itself and the qualities that the line itself carries. If the rune is not connected with the lines of the palm, but is located on some hillock or plain, then this indicates certain qualities of the individual himself, his abilities, possible diseases and phobias, deviations from the norm (both positive and negative). ) etc.

Bharata can be considered the birthplace of astrology and palmistry; perhaps, only in the Indian (Vedic) scriptures is there a mention of how these sciences were given to people by the gods. The famous yogi, son of Brahma (the creator of the material universe) - Bhrigu Muni received this knowledge from Lord Vishnu as a gift. Vishnu's wife, the Goddess of Prosperity Lakshmi, was angry with this sage, she cursed all the brahmanas in the person of Bhrigu Muni (for his behavior) and doomed them to beggary, and Vishnu gave Bhrigu Muni sciences, thanks to which the brahmanas could earn their own food. But what is the connection between India and Scandinavia? Perhaps someone will restore this connection if they try to connect Brahmi (an ancient Indian language that is older than Sanskrit) with Futhark runes. I’ll tell you about an equally interesting connection between runes and notes. It is possible that the information will be of more interest to musicians, but I recommend that other readers at least read the next chapter quickly, since it will talk about serious things, it is more about the connection between man and the entire universe. After all, only a person is capable of intelligently reproducing certain melodies, be it with his voice or with the help of a musical instrument. Music is vibrations, runes are also vibrations, the first vibrations are tonal, the second are visual, but in essence they are the same vibrations, it’s just that in the first case we hear them, and in the second we see them.

Runes are the key to all sciences and arts; if you search and do not stop at fortune telling, you can open many doors. You already have the keys - these are the runic signs themselves, and you can’t find a lock for them right away, humbly wait in the wings and practice. This way you can understand the runic language that was given to us by the Gods. This is not a pagan cult or black magic, this is cosmic science that opens up new horizons of knowledge. Don't stop there. Dare, and knowledge will be revealed to you!

"Runic Astrology" (R) & (C) Mefissto

Sveta was sitting on a block of wood.
At her feet a fire was burning, built in the hearth - a shallow hole in the earthen floor, lined with stones. The smoke floated upward towards the hole in the roof. The boards and rafters hanging low overhead seemed dark, as if tarred...
It smelled of dampness and bitter smoke. The cold pierced her body from the back; the linen shirt that reached her knees did little to protect her from it. But my feet were hot.
But Sveta hardly noticed this. Ulf was alive, Ulf was nearby...
And the joy that blazed inside from this thought warmed me stronger than the fire that burned in the hearth.
But other thoughts also came through. How did it happen? Does the Gyof rune really stop the action of Iss, the rune of ice? Or did all the runes she drew before work? Or - all together, and Ghiof in addition?
Ulf, while she looked at him, floating in rapturous happiness mixed with thoughts, silently went about his business. He removed the intricate tripod along with the pot away from the fire and took out a clay bowl from a bag hanging on a peg by the door. He poured the brew into it from the cauldron, using a large wooden spoon.
And he put it all in Sveta’s hands. Warned:
– I carved the spoon myself. So eat carefully so as not to hurt your lips...
The clay edges of the bowl burned my fingers. The wounds on my palms immediately began to ache. She froze, not daring to put the vessel on her knees. Ulf suddenly stepped to the side. He grabbed one of the covers from the bed, rolled it up, and slipped it under her arms, covering her knees.
- Place it.
Sveta obediently lowered the bowl onto the cloth. I scooped up the brew. A spoon made of roughly planed wood, more like a small ladle, trembled in his fingers. They tried to unclench, their palms hurt...
Ulf dragged a stumpy stump from the entrance, threw it on the ground on the other side of the hearth, and sat down. He immediately leaned forward, placing his elbows comfortably on his spread knees - and hanging his clawed palms down. He looked at her with a burning amber gaze. He said slowly:
- While you eat, I will tell you.
Sveta nodded hastily. Looking at him and trying not to think about the pain, she raised a spoon to her lips, from which hung long fibers of boiled meat, some kind of roots that looked like thick threads.
“I snuck into Thorgeir’s bedchamber,” said Ulf. “But he tied me up.” They say that the god Odin has a special gift - he looks at a person, and he freezes... or misses, striking. Odin uses his gift to take the best warriors to Valhalla. Those who are not easy to kill. So, I tried to kill Thorgeir - but I missed every time. And then he froze like a fly in resin. Don’t move, don’t twitch... only later did Thorgeir boast in front of me that he was marked by the favor of the gods. As I understand it, he had that very gift One...
Sveta froze, the spoon plopped back into the bowl.
“Come on, have some bread,” Ulf said sternly. - Maybe I should feed you? If your hands don't hold...
She shook her head. She scooped up the stew again and demanded, raising the spoon to her lips:
- Ulf - talk!
He suddenly grinned.
-Are you in command? No wonder Thorgeir reproached me for giving you too much freedom. These two, Thorgeir and Hildegard, hoped that you would open a passage to me. You will come to save me... and while I was stuck in their bedchamber, in wolf skin, they talked. The main thing I heard is that your gift can be taken away, Sveita. If you pick up the Chalice rune, Pertfu, and give it to someone with a light heart, your strength will go to that person. Maybe something else needs to be done - but Hildegard didn’t mention it...
“I understand,” Sveta muttered hastily. - Pertfu - no.
Ulf nodded.
- Yes, you shouldn't touch her. And now the main thing. Thorgeir and Hildegard were going to do something. In exchange for the mercy of the gods, as I understand it. To do this, Thorgeir had to be declared king. The next day, an arval was already scheduled - a wake for Olaf, the former king. After this, Thorgeir, as expected, would be raised on shields...
And then, cutting off his words, there was suddenly a knock on the door.
Ulf silently rushed towards Sveta. A short, almost indistinguishable movement of his hand - the already familiar scabbard, previously hanging on his neck and hidden under his shirt, hung in the air in front of her...
She grabbed onto them, almost knocking over the bowl. She hastily turned it over so that the Gate rune carved on the scabbard was in a straight position.
Ulf, who had managed to grab the hatchet lying near the hearth, had already frozen next to the entrance. The braid of grayish hair that reached his shoulder blades shortened before Sveta’s eyes, unraveling...
And the outlines of the back of the head and neck were rapidly changing. The shoulders became more sloping and swelled into bulges. From the thick milky fur that spread along the neck - and further, to the corner of the lower jaw - a pointed, also woolly ear peeked out.
- Ours! – someone’s voice said loudly from behind the door. Masculine, confident...
“Mine are not here,” Ulf grumbled quickly.
“I come in peace,” they said slowly from behind the door. – And he came from the world of your wife.
Ulf turned his head slightly towards Sveta. And she saw what he had become now. The jaws stretched out, the nose lengthened, the forehead rose above the bridge of the nose in a steep hill - and all this was overgrown with milky-gray hair. Amber eyes flashed brightly from the muzzle-like face.

True, “Rune” hooked me less than “Berserk”. Although the heroes, plot twists, and characters are in some ways very similar. But... here there is a less powerful love line, unfortunately, and it develops much sharper and faster, there is not that smoothness and gradualness, in my opinion. The heroes accept all this too quickly. There are almost no doubts or torments for you here. I missed this a little.

But, nevertheless, the novel is good. First of all, with your heroes. No reflections, no hysterics. The author states that "18+! There are... scenes of violence!" , but to be honest, I didn’t notice any violence here.

The heroine reacts adequately (maybe even too much) to finding herself in another world, and even in something like the Middle Ages, and even immediately becoming a wife, and even immediately becoming a werewolf. No, she, of course, is scared, but she thinks sensibly, weighs all the available facts, conditions and possibilities and chooses his defense quite reasonably. And, of course, in the end it remains in the black, how could it be different in LFR? Our girl is well-mannered, brave, proud, selfless, honest, selfless and kind. She deserves all the happiness. Well, of course, here, as in the author’s “Berserk,” there were some additional goodies for the heroine. In True Midgard, she discovered the gift of the mistress of local witchcraft runes, which in this world remained only in legends. She learns to wield this power somewhere on her own, somewhere under the guidance of her werewolf husband. These runes are dangerous, by the way. I was especially impressed by the movement rune. Before you had time to slip through the “hole” of the portal, your arm was cut off at the elbow. Tough, though.:d

And the hero, Ulf Ormulfson, is a match for our heroine. A worthy jarl, a valiant warrior, a decent and protective husband. Not without “military cunning” in actions and actions, of course, but all this with the best intentions and without deceitful deceit. He nobly reveals to Svetlana the secret of her power, explains all the advantages and offers her his protection without any conditions, although this is not beneficial to him.

The romance is, in general, very good. Especially for me, a lover of men who are “unfortunate” in at least some way, I was emotionally “pleased” by the fact that the main character was abandoned by his first wife, and then there were unsuccessful searches for brides and refusals during matchmaking. I love it when a decent, worthwhile man is finally made happy with a good, well-deserved wife. And even with such a Gift in the dowry.

The adventure/fantasy line here is not bad, but it is not revealed at all, only hints. Why was Sveta needed? How did you find out about her? Where does this Gift come from? What is the villains' ultimate goal? It is clear that the power, but without details. Who are the Frost and Fire Jotuns? Whom they serve, for what and why is not clear.
There is an enemy, marked by some incomprehensible “mercy of the gods”, the gods Odin, Tyr and Loki appear, elves/elfs appear, and the barb of a trap. As I understand it, the author will reveal all this in the second book, but I will most likely focus on this one. I’m not a fan of adventure, but the romantic line happily ended with a happy ending already in the first part. Although, I would read about their little wolf
