If you don't know what cowries look like, or you can't get the right amount of them, take any other shells. As a last resort, you can take sixteen coins (or any identical objects with two different sides). Just clearly define in advance for yourself what your obi (coin, etc.) will have a “mouth” - heads or tails, and do not deviate from this rule. In Santeria, cowries are traditionally used for divination, of course, but in our conditions, apparently, we will have to make do with something else.

Now about how to make the Ifa Board. It is a round or square (but not oval or rectangular) tray measuring approximately 30x30 or 60x60 centimeters, with a side that will prevent the shells from scattering in all directions when thrown. The tray must be divided into four equal parts or sectors. Each sector has its own meaning and is responsible for a certain energy.

In the upper right sector of the Ifa Board, draw in black on a white background the symbol of Erzulie Dantor - negative feminine energy. This part of the "Board" deals with issues of anger, hatred, jealousy and oppression.

In the upper left sector of the “Board of Ifa” you need to draw the symbol of Legba - the Lord of the Crossroads - in white on a black background. This part of the “Board” symbolizes positive, benevolent, masculine energy. It relates to issues of communication, travel, contracts and “white” magic.

In the lower left sector of the Ifa Board there is the symbol of Erzulie (as you remember, Erzulie is the goddess of love), it must be drawn in black on an orange background. This is positive feminine energy. This part of the “Board” is important for questions related to various love affairs.

In the lower right sector of the Ifa Board, the symbol of Baron Samedi is drawn in black on a red background, representing negative, aggressive male energy. Now count how many shells that “speak” in each sector of the Ifa Board. This will give you four more numbers. If any shell falls on the line between the sectors, then it needs to be taken into account only in the overall answer, but not when counting in sectors. And one more significant point: the sector of the “Ifa Board” in which there are the most “talking” shells indicates the nature of the prevailing energy, and the sector where there are the fewest such shells indicates weak energy.

Each number is associated with certain “sayings” and mythological stories (this is very similar to the “aphorisms” and comments to the 64 hexagrams of the Chinese I-Ching - the Book of Changes).
